March has been a weird month, both in my personal life and in the storyline of Homestuck, and I’ve found myself drawn once again to the play/miniseries Angels in America by Tony Kushner. Painting Aradia as Benjamin’s Angel of History that Kushner uses as a motif in the play was only inevitable.

A few new notes on the symbolism: I don’t speak or read Hebrew or Georgian, but I thought that using both languages would go well with Aradia, theme-wise. The large letter at the top is aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The two letters below are mem and tav. When you have all three together, they spell emet (‘truth’), but without aleph, they spell met (‘death’). The small silver letter above Skaia is bet, the second letter in the alphabet. Aleph and bet are reminiscient of the Alpha and Beta sessions.

The Georgian script on the scroll is my feeble attempt to spell out the names of all the dead characters (so far). I’m not sure if it makes a lick of sense, but I did it at 3 AM, so logic was already out the window at that point.

I’ve been wrestling with my clunky bad scanner, and this was a fairly OK scan after all. I will be uploading a cleaner-looking version once I can get to the scan shop during the week.

Watercolors, gold and silver pigment, gouache, calligraphy ink and Copic marker on hot press watercolor paper.

Absolutely beautiful as usual! I can't get over how much I love the colour scheme! The small Skaia at the bottom is such a nice accent and gives the whole piece this feeling of perspective and balance! Just gorgeous!
